Downstream posterior basolateral amygdala activity was associated with anxiety-like behavior. In one longer experiment, anxiety-model mice received controlled 2 Hz nasal airflow. This stimulation lasted for two hours per day for 14 days.

The researchers reported improved anxiety-like behavioral measures and restoration of perirhinal-cortex high-gamma activity. The reported behavioral and neural improvements did not significantly decline during the one-week period afterward. The study measured activity in the 65 to 95 Hz high-gamma range of the perirhinal cortex.

Low-frequency stimulation increased activity there, and high-frequency stimulation reduced it. It is easy to see this data and try to force a rigid breathing rhythm into your life. But the study used implanted nasal cannulas and highly controlled airflow.

The researchers could not isolate purely mechanical sensing from the other functions of olfactory sensory neurons. These neurons participate in odorant detection. They use receptor mechanisms involved in both chemical and mechanical signaling.
