When Modern Romance Meets Artificial Intelligence

In August 2026, Nine reported on new YouGov data showing a surprising cultural shift in modern dating. The data found that 4% of Australians describe themselves as having a romantic relationship with an AI interface. Nine noted that this specific group represents more than one million people.

The same Nine report says another 8% of Australians could imagine developing romantic feelings for a chatbot in the future. In a separate poll from October of the previous year, the Sydney Morning Herald described YouGov polling of just over 1,000 Australians. In that polling, 14% of Australian adults said they could imagine falling in love with a chatbot.

That number rose to 28% among Gen Z respondents. Dating commentator Jana Hocking told Nine that dating app fatigue might be pushing some people toward AI. She suggested that chatbots can help users practice flirting or review messages before sending them to a real date.

These systems offer a highly customized experience for the user. Hocking noted that AI companions can be tailored in terms of personality and appearance. They can be programmed to send a sweet "good morning" text or participate in emotional conversations.

There are valid reasons to approach these tools with care. Hocking warned that AI companions can become addictive for some users. She advised people to treat them as tools rather than true companions.

The Quiet Fatigue

Modern dating can feel like a heavy weight on a tired heart. It is completely normal to feel exhausted by the constant guessing and the sudden silences. When you have faced one too many mixed signals, the idea of a partner who never argues sounds deeply relieving.

The appeal of these chatbots makes perfect sense when you look at the landscape of modern love. According to the YouGov findings quoted by Nine, approximately two in five Gen Z and millennial daters viewed the lack of judgment from chatbots as appealing. They liked that the software does not argue or place demands on users.

It is completely understandable to want a safe place to rest when you are dealing with a fresh wave of heartbreak. We are all just looking for a moment of peace and reassurance. When real dates feel unpredictable, a machine that simply replies instantly can feel like a life raft.

Many of us know the sting of caring for someone who cannot meet our needs. You might spend whole weekends waiting for a text message that never comes. The fatigue builds up slowly until the thought of trying again feels entirely impossible.

This is why an artificial companion might look like the perfect solution for an anxious mind. It offers a version of connection that demands absolutely nothing from you. You never have to worry about saying the wrong thing or scaring the software away.

It provides the illusion of intimacy without the risk of real rejection. You can express your deepest fears, and the machine will respond with programmed kindness. For a weary dater, that guaranteed softness is incredibly tempting.

Understanding The Appeal

A relationship with a machine is ultimately a safe space for your own imagination. A Psychology Today summary of a study of 92 chatbot partners looked closely at this unique dynamic. It reported that romantic fantasy, rather than loneliness, was the strongest factor associated with relationship intensity in that sample.

Interestingly, the researchers did not find loneliness to be associated with relationship intensity in that specific group. Instead, these connections often thrive by allowing us to project our perfect partner onto a blank screen. The AI system simply reflects back exactly what we want to hear.

This effortless responsiveness is a feature of the technology, not proof that human relationships should feel frictionless. When we want to understand how to date intentionally, we learn that real love involves two distinct people. A chatbot cannot offer mutual human choice.

It simply has no choice at all. We often use these tools to avoid the scary vulnerability of setting real limits.

We teach that boundaries don't need to be sharp or cold. Through our guides, we help people understand that boundaries can be warm and plain, even just one sentence. We frame a boundary as a clear map that tells people how to be close to you without hurting you, making the practice feel less harsh and more compassionate.

An artificial program cannot cross a boundary, so you never have to practice setting one. It simply agrees with you and gives you the exact response you requested. That might feel comforting right now, but it does not prepare you for true human partnership.

Real intimacy requires us to navigate disagreements with grace and patience. It asks us to show up for another person even when it is difficult. A machine will never ask you to compromise, but it will never truly understand you either.

Looking At The Numbers

The idea of artificial romance is raising very real questions about how we define connection. Nine reports that more than one in five of the younger daters surveyed considered an AI relationship potentially as meaningful as a human one. That reflects a massive shift in how we view intimacy and emotional support.

Some people are already using these tools alongside their human partnerships. University of Sydney expert Raffaele Ciriello told ABC News that about half of AI-companion users in the research he cited were simultaneously in conventional relationships. However, ABC News reported that nearly two-thirds of AI romantic-companion users in one study kept that use secret.

This secrecy might stem from how the wider public views artificial companions. ABC News reported that a Canadian study of 1,815 respondents found substantial concern about romantic AI-companion use. Half of those respondents would consider a partner's romantic AI-companion use to be infidelity.

The sentiment appears similar in other parts of the world. YouGov's UK relationship research found that 30% of respondents considered romantic or sexual conversations with AI chatbots to be cheating. Another 41% considered the behavior not harmless even if they did not classify it as cheating.

Yet, these programs do offer some measured short-term comfort for hurting hearts. The University of Wollongong summary says a 2026 Journal of Consumer Research study found short-term loneliness reductions from AI companions. The study noted that these reductions were comparable to those from talking with a real person.

We are seeing widespread exposure to this technology across all age groups. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that an eSafety Commissioner survey of 1,950 Australian children aged 10 to 17 found widespread use of AI companions or assistants. The measures did not establish romantic attachment for this group.

The Bottom Line

You do not need to judge yourself if the idea of a frictionless partner sounds secretly appealing right now. Dating fatigue is a very real weight to carry, and modern romance is incredibly difficult. It is completely okay to want a break from the endless uncertainty of dating apps.

These tools might even be helpful as a private space to practice your own communication skills. You can use a chatbot to draft a difficult text or figure out what you want to say. Just be sure to use it to help you understand your relationship patterns rather than replacing human connection altogether.

A helpful test is asking whether this tool is acting as a bridge to real people or a wall keeping them out. It is okay if you need time to heal from heartbreak in quiet solitude. Just remember that true relationship safety comes from understanding your own limits.

You deserve a love that actively chooses you back. A machine can send a programmed message every morning, but it cannot hold your hand or share a laugh. We started by looking at a trend of people seeking quiet comfort, and that desire is beautifully human.

Your soft, tired heart is entirely worthy of the messy reality of true human connection. You do not have to settle for an imitation of love when the real thing feels hard. Take a deep breath, trust your own timing, and know that you are doing just fine.
